why does anyone still think that growing corn for ethanol fuel is a good idea?

  1. It’s just the tip of the iceberg. Anything grown for biofuel will impact food production.

Hope the UN didn’t fudge the global warming numbers too bad because people are going to starve.

  2. Yes, It’s such a good idea. That would free us of the oil tycoons! All they have to do is, build more farms and put more farmers to work. How can that not help the U.S.

  3. Not me, never did.

  4. Taking into consideration that the corn used for ethanol is “field corn” and NOT the sweet corn that humans consume, yeah, it’s a good idea.

  5. Looks as if we will soon have to choose to either eat or drive. But its bad news for those who already have little food to eat.

  6. Because Nobodys REALLY gotten around to the, “On Second Thought…”- part of the Issue, just yet… Wait for another $1. increase on Milk & Bread- for people to begin Asking, “WHY are Staples getting so EXPENSIVE?!- Could it BE there’s NOT enough grain available to keep prices down…?!” The “Bush mentality”- tends to be alittle SLOW on the “uptake…” :(

  7. Yeah, I doubt “corn exhaust” would punch holes into the O-zone in a more rapid rate then fossil fuels……….

  8. Scrooge, If the poor countries are complaining about the price of food because of ethanol then they should NOT have 5 or babies. It’s time these 3rd world countries start taking responsibilty for their actions and practice birth control.

  9. I’d rather pollute the environment over having food riots.

If they quit paying farmers NOT to grow crops, it would not be so bad. It’s not like us not turning something into ethanol is going to keep people in places like Somalia from starving.

People who starve in the Third World starve from more than scarcity of food, they starve because their governments make sure they don’t get food by stealing what is sent to them and selling it, or keeping them hungry because they oppose the government. We could grow and send a million tons of food to Africa and they would still starve.

Converting biomass to fuel is about the only way to to get a quick start on a renewable fuel supply, short of using nuclear generated electricity to crack seawater for the hydrogen. If we do that then all we have to do is completely rebuild our fuel distribution system and convert every motor vehicle on the road to a compressed gas fuel system instead of liquid fuel as we are set up for now….

Ethanol should be starting to make a little more sense by now, maybe not made from food though. Converting raw cellulose would not affect the food supply, since you could use the parts of a plant that we don’t eat.

We gotta do something. If that state of mind is grounds to give an empty suit like Barack Hussein Obama a shot at the Presidency, it should stretch to cover research into alternative fuels as well.

  11. IT’S NOT WORTH IT, ALL THE SIGNS ARE ALREADY THERE OF IT’S TRUE COST, WAY TO MANY TO BRING UP HERE. BUT I WILL BRING UP IT’S COST TO THE WORLD FOOD SUPPLY AND THAT IT USE UP WAY TO MUCH ENERGY TO MAKE IT WORTH WHILE.
