When we switch to electric cars will petrolheads fit sound systems to make them sound like gas guzzlers?

electric cars

Although electric cars look to have amazing acceleration, they make the same noise my radio controlled model makes. I can envisage petrol-heads buying sound systems to make them play the sound of a big 6 litre gas guzzling monster. Or has it been done already?

  1. actully on pimp my ride they inatlled a system to make a mini van sound like a sports car. but we all wont be driving electrics cause the goverment wont let the oil companys go out of bussiness cuase then they wont collect taxes. good idea, they soud sell systems just for that reason. tunners always have the big fart pipes so they sound “cool” but they lose all the back pressure with 6 inch tips, and because thay all almost have systems anyway, theyll save some money.

  2. I hope not! One of the greatest things about driving an electric car is how quiet it is. It’s so nice to be able to hear youself think and hear what’s going on around you.

Also, could you imagine once electric cars become common, how much nicer it will be to live near a busy street.

Making an electric car sound noisy would be rediculous, in my opinion.

Nice idea… could have a whole range of effects… V12 Engine with full turbochargers, Horsedrawn Carridge, Steam locomotive…

Not to sure the working man will agree with when we switch to electric,i have to leave that to the money men,and i dont envisage driving electric,i used to drive my wifes milk float for her sometimes and at 30 downhill it was scary. And as pointed out,the refineries and big boys wont just bow there heads and leave,oh boy,if they did what chaos. Also well said, engines work best with the correct piston back pressure, and whacko exhausts make me laugh. Its going to be quite funny with a dead short on an electric boat,oh ,they use diesel some one said

Don’t worry. Given the limitations and huge inefficiency of battery power in cars, this situation will never happen.

  6. Yup, it’s been done.

There is a device on the market that can be programmed to make the engine note of a V8 muscle car, or supercharged straight-six, plus about three or four other engine types. It runs from a sensor on the ignition and feeds a speaker inside the car. Utterly bizarre!!

But then, you can buy fake push-rods to make your Japanese custom bike look like a Harley. Such is life…

  7. It actually NEEDS to be done! How are you going to hear the thing coming up behind you if you are a pedestrian?
One of the new Jags changes exhaust sound at a certain speed.
