Wow, what other industry has been brought down by soaring fuel prices?
Do airlines desperately need to retrofit planes with engines that can use alternative energy?

No. The Government needs to consider the value of the dollar. That is the sole problem.
They need to quit paying their CEOs obscene salaries and bonuses in exchange for failure.
Initially the government needs to step in and curtail the oil speculators with regulations. Its terrible that oil tankers or sitting off the coast and shore of America, awaiting for the price of a barrel of oil to increase out of greed.
The Airline Industry will have a cause effect on other industries that rely upon them such as hotels, tourist destination, and municipalities that own a majority of the airports. Thin about the maids, cooks, waiters and managers who will be laid-off. Those individuals will cut back altogether or not venture out as consumers, when money is tight.
Employees of such airports (parking attendants, baggage handlers, restaurants, novelty shops, gift shops and duty-free stations will fall victim to the recession and lost of revenues.
It isn’t so much a question of alternative fuels for the airplanes but alternative fuels for combustion engines in general. Or, alternative to combustion engines for ground transportation.
By developing alternative fuels and engines for ground transportation, we relieve the demand for fossil fuels and that will help keep airline costs in check…if we get going on it!
Let’s see Obama get a 747 off the ground with solar panels or a windmill.
