They consist of about 1.25% of the US market. Most fuel use is NOT from small vehicles (i.e. Prius, Insight), but from trucks (SUVs, vans, etc). Those who buy hybrids would not buy a large vehicle anyway! Thus, hybrids COULD help, but only if they address where gas is REALLY used and where emissions REALLY come from: large vehicles, not small vehicles. If you are considering a vehicle: skip the hybrid label and just buy the vehicle that get the best mileage! When the large batteries need to be changed out, there will be the waste from those. Different kinds of batteries have different issues, Lead/Acid, Lithium ion, and so on. That is the engines most in effecient time. That is where a hybrid shines because it runs strictly on batteries in those situations. So for the future of this earth I say yes.
