Using the wind energy from speed to save electricity?
Okay I was thinking of ways to help with the energy crises and was wondering:
if generators need to spin to make electricity
and when things go fast there’s wind,
why not hook a generator to the car (on top many in a box, with two openings on the front and back)and use the wind to spin the generator causing electricity to be made.
So what’s wrong with that idea?
The power to spin the generator is coming from the engine of the car. Power from the generator means more wind drag on the car means more power required from the engine. This is a consequence of the law of conservation of energy. You can’t get something for nothing.
The air drag you would cause on the car would be greater than the power out of your generator.
not a bad idea but imagine the amount of noise created by a road filled with cars using this technology. you won’t be able to sleep.
Mounting a device on top of the car will not work because it is against conservation of energy principle. You cannot get energy from nothing. The device increases drag and hence the car is going to use more energy and reducing the friction the power generated is going to be less than the increase in energy.
Think out of the box to get a better idea. Come out with a solution such that the wind force exiting the vehicle – Imagine standing on the pavement when a big vehicle zips past you. What do you feel? A sort of drag isn’t it- can be harnessed. In this case the device is outside the vehicle and hence will not cause extra drag on the vehicle and the wind coming out of the vehicle can e converted to power.
because it is dumb
